I recently had the honor and pleasure to attend the Scholastic Literacy Summit. Karen Mapp, Author and Harvard Professor, was one of the keynote speakers and she emphasized that no longer can we allow generational disrespect of our families to prevail, instead  there must be an enduring partnership where parents learn how to support their student's mastery and growth. The data she expressed on attendance and academic performance was compelling. What resonated and stayed with me after the presentation was that family engagement is not an add-on but a key factor in student learning. Dynamic Leaders, How do you engage your families?

The role of parent engagement is key, especially in our more economically challenged environments.

Your question easily speaks to the BIG EVENT TYPE things our leaders may do (parent nights, carnivals, fall fests) but I can see some very quick, simple yet essentials things needed for true parent engagement.

I have seen great leaders engage families in very simple ways: updated online gradebooks and updated teacher and school websites (meaning WEEKLY) are easy ways to foster engagement.

Good principals take ownership of these things and also hold their teachers accountable for the updates.

Good principals also update the physical space to foster engagement. Learning spaces are teaching spaces. Updated bulletin boards indicate attention to detail and concern for the larger picture.

Thank you for sharing that even though you are the “master” principal, you are still learning and growing. I think it is fundamental that we (aspiring leaders) are never at a place where learning and “ahas” stop.
